Dalhart Area Chamber of CommerceDalhart is the center of activity for the neighboring communities of Texline, Hartley and Channing, and is located in the northwest corner of the Lone Star State. Dalhart is named for the two counties that it borders – Dallam and Hartley.
Dalhart boasts the top grain and corn production in the state, and is home to the top companies in the cattle, hog dairy and cheese industries. The progressive nature of this community has been to actively attract value-added agricultural businesses to our area to enhance the thriving agribusiness climate of the Panhandle.
Dalhart has a wonderful, relaxed spirit that is attractive to newcomers and visitors. What other city offers the world’s largest free barbeque? Feeding an estimated 20,000 people during the annual XIT Rodeo and Reunion, this “little” get-together, celebrated the first Thursday through Saturday of each August, is a 70+ year Dalhart tradition, and still going strong.
And, we are not only about business. Education, the arts and quality of life are other traits that make Dalhart a popular home for young families, retirees and businesses. The LaRita Theatre, dubbed the crown jewel of the Panhandle, hosts theatrical and musical performances throughout the year. Youth are afforded a multitude of opportunities in education, sports, organizations and art-enrichment programs.
Highlights of Dalhart’s recent successes include the attraction of a major manufacturing facility, Hilmar Cheese; expansion of US Highway 87 to a four-lane divided highway in Dallam County; remodeling of the Rita Blanca Coliseum into a state-of-the-art facility; and the addition of the Legacy Assisted Living Community.
The future is paved with more highlights to come with our inclusion in the Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor connecting Mexico to Colorado through west Texas; expanded agricultural opportunities; and a new high school planned for occupancy in 2007.

Oldham County Interesting FactsOldham County is larger than the state of Rhode Island, measuring 50 miles by 30 miles. It was once part of the famous XIT Ranch, the 3-million acre ranch granted in 1879 by the state of Texas to the Capital Land Syndicate Oldham County has been dubbed the SOLAR CAPITAL of Texas, Oldham County has been the site of various movies and videos including: Adrian is the geo-mathematical midpoint of Route 66. “When You’re Here, You’re Half-Way There!”

Panhandle Plains Historical MuseumLocated in Canyon, Texas, 15 minutes south of Amarillo on I-27, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is the largest history museum in Texas. The Museum contains 22 galleries and 2 milion articles in subjects including petroleum, art, textiles, archeology, and transportation.

One of our most famous residents of Perryton is Hank the Cowdog. A fictional character created by long-time Perryton resident John Erickson, Hank the Cowdog is the head of Ranch Security at his ranch. Since his debut in 1982 in “Cattleman” magazine, Hank has been entertaining children and adults alike with stories of daily life on a ranch.
