Panhandle Tourism Marketing Council Update: Week of June 30, 2003

1. Lake Party: PTMC's July 11th (Friday) is at Fritch Fortress Amphitheater, Lake Meredith National Recreation Area on Friday, at 6:00 p.m. Supper is chuckwagon BBQ from Dyer's, $7.00 per plate. The musical drama Lone Star Rising starts at 8:15 p.m. and is $10.00 per person. RSVP to Judy or Karren.

2. It's not Junk, Honey!: Quanah Saturday Market offers over 175 booths filled with bargains and treasures for your shopping pleasure. The best flea market in the panhandle.

3. Money for Kids: The first high plains youth art festival takes place July 26th in Miami and Pampa. Over $1,000 in cash prizes. Anyone aged 18 and under eligible. Register here...

4. Playing TAG: The Texas Accommodations Guide offers low-cost, high impact ad space for b&b, lodge, or motel/hotel advertisers. The most-read, most-requested ad piece for out-of-area visitors.

5. Help from our Friends: The West Texas Small Business Development Center, Panhandle Region Planning Commission, and Enterprise Network all spoke at a small business finance workshop held in Miami on June 24th.

6. It Ain't Fair: It's state fair..the tri-state fair contests for art, photograpy, ceramics, and a host of other categories will be held September 12-20, in Amarillo. Call 806-376-7767.

7. It's not Ruined, it's Art: Artist Doug Ricketts has his latest exhibit, Art from the Ruins, on display at the River Valley Pioneer Museum in Canadian. This amazing project tells the tale of a High Plains family through an amazing creation of furniture. Seeing's believing.

8. Dance a Little, Eat a Lot: The Dance Platform in Lipscomb has its July Dance on the 18th, with Lanny Fiel's Ranch Dance Fiddle Band.

9. Expo-sing Oneself: The PTMC set up a booth at Pampa's business expo on June 20th. The event had great attendance--thanks to the Pampa Chamber of Commerce!

10. Lots of Limos: The Begert Ranch, in Hemphill County, offers lots more than some of the world's finest Limousin cattle...they also offer lodging, guided hunts, and some of the best wildlife watching anywhere.

11. We're Here to Help: Texas Department of Economic Development tourism specialists Erin Kerley and Shelly Hargrove visited Pampa last week to discuss changes and improvements for the tourism certified pilot program.

12. Taken to Court: Donley County celebrates the dedication of its renovated court house on July 4th at 9:30 a.m. Mac Thornberry and a host of other dignitaries will attend. This coincides with the 126th edition of Clarendon's Fourth of July bash!

13. The Oldest: Canadian celbrates America's oldest public rodeo on Independence Day. Parade, craft show, art show...all the trimmings!

14. The Road More Traveled: PTMC has just posted another set of county itineraries. Looking for something fun, interesting, and educational to do? Our itineraries will show you a part of Texas you've never seen--without breaking the bank.

15. PTMC and PRPC: PTMC spoke in June to the economic development board of the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission about regional tourism as a key component for economic development.

16. Line 'em up: The concept of trade corridors as a way to stimulate economic development in rural areas has been aggressively pursued by two different internationally-minded organizations: check web sites for the Central North American Trade Corridor and the Coahuila, Texas, Oklahoma Corridor Trade Association to see how local can mean global.

17. It's all in the Region: Sponsored by Midwestern State University's Small Business Development Center, PTMC spoke to an enthusiastic group in Quanah this month about developing a regional tourism marketing council. An organizational meeting will be held this coming September in Wichita Falls.

18. Hacker's Paradise: The Spearman Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual golf tourney on August 9th and 10th. Prizes, food, and all the 20-inch divots you care to dig!

19. Shooter's Paradise: Galactically renowned photographer Wyman Meinzer is putting on photo workshops July 11-13 for folks interested in learning from the best.

20. Chicks with Bucks: Texas has just launched its affiliate program for the U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce. Look and see what they can do for you

21. I Hate Computers: That's okay--you are not alone. Clarendon is offering classes--$5 a shot--to help you get over your computer allergy.
